ADRIFT IN THE DEEP

Adrift in the deep is the most expansive and experimental musical project i've embarked on. Creating more than 35 total tracks whittled down to 10, it's an exploration in sonic and thematic unity. I wanted to create an album that tells a story, with no words ever spoken.

Production began in Spring 2021 following the release of Vivid Edge, a concept album about a ragtag group of mercenaries racing to beat a tyrannical dictator to the edge of the known universe. The ending of Vivid Edge implies that the pilot: a character by the name of Erika Polaris, reaches the edge. But in this album, after she reaches the other side, she realizes that the mysterious divide isn't just a void between worlds, it's a world of it's own.

The challenge then, was to communicate this story through just peaks and lulls of the music. Much of the music here is isolated, lonely, but energetic. The idea was to create the feeling of a desperate search for answers, and that carries through much of the album.

Much of the album takes influences across the electronic space, with high speed drum & bass influences dictating much of the early album. However, the deeper we go the more the genre style diffuses, we begin to see downtempo, break beat, trip hop even. While using late 90's electronic music was my baseline inspiration, I made sure to allow for occasional breaks to the monotony, it's important for holding a viewers  attention on a full playthrough.

Adrift in the Deep was produced primarily in Fl Studio 20.1. It has been my weapon of choice in music production for years now. It was also mastered in Universal Audio's LUNA on an external Apollo interface with the help of my good friend Tommy Ryan, better known by his stage name Sound Psychologist.
